Roosevelt Trachuk Obituary

Roosevelt  Trachuk
AUGUST 20. 1941 – December 6, 2015
It is with deep sadness the family of Rozy  announce his passing the morning of Dec 6, 2015 at the age of 74 years.
Everyone who met Rozy  will remember him as a strong and intelligent man, always entertaining and sometimes eccentric, but always doing things his own way.  Books opened the world for him.  He believed you could learn to do anything from a book and his extensive bookshelves reflect this.  He had minimal formal education but built a windmill, putting in a solar heating system and did extensive planting of his “ little bit of heaven “ as he called his acreage.  His home was a pride to him as he built an earth dome house that cost minimal to heat and has stood the test of time for well over fifty years.  He used to laugh that he never had upkeep on it as it was green in the summer, brown in the fall and white in the winter.
Rozy used to travel a great deal.  He went to Mexico by car and travelled around there.  He also travelled in unconventional ways.  His 10 speed bike travelled across England and Europe and down the USA Westcoast, across the southern states and up the Eastern states.  He travelled from the West Coast to Newfoundland for Canada’s Centennial in 1967 .  He felt you could only see the country if you were close to the soil and could smell it.  Another unusual trip was to paddle his canoe through one of Canada’s majestic river systems.  We cracked a bottle of champagne on the bow of his canoe in the Peace River at Fort St. John, BC and he paddled for 3 months through the waterways until he came to the Mackenzie River Delta.  He told us if he did not contact us in three months then he was probably bear food.
He was a member of the operators Union for fifty years and this was a great source of pride for him.  He loved working the big machines and loved doing various jobs to the very best of his ability.
After his second heart attack, he did a lot of completation of his life.  He told us he was happy with his life as he had done what he wanted, gone where he wanted and answered to nobody.
It was his choice to refuse further medical intervention and he asked me to honor that wish.  He did not want to live anywhere except his own place and he did not want anyone looking after him.  As per his wishes, he will be returned to his property.
His family would like to extend their gratitude to his many friends and neighbors who kept visiting and phoning and helping him when needed.   He had the greatest regard for each of you and we will be eternally grateful to you.  He was one of a kind and will remain in our hearts and memory forever.
He is survived by his sister and brother and number of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a brother, infant sister and his parents.
