Roger Riehl Obituary

Roger Lewis Riehl

July 7, 1938 - October 13, 2021

With great sorrow we share the loss of our loved one Roger Lewis Riehl on October 13, 2021. Who died peacefully in Edson, Alberta with his children by his side. Roger Riehl was born in Wildwood, Alberta on July 7, 1938, the second oldest of Arthur and Lydia Riehl. Roger met and married Margaret Hawryluk on September 30, 1961.

They lived on a farm northwest of Wildwood where he would take up farming, trucking and raise his family of 10 children with his wife for the next 60 years. His children are left to mourn his loss. Sherryl (Ralph) Leidl of Whitecourt, Gayle (Jim) Walker of Wildwood, David (Rose) Riehl of Drayton Valley, Dawna (Richard) Heske of Wildwood, Gloria (Don) MacDonald of Wildwood, Joan (Scott) Barnes of Sylvan Lake, Arthur (Trina) Riehl of Cranbrook, B.C., Ronald (Jamie) Riehl of Wildwood, Jayne (Warren) Walker of Wildwood, Janice (David) Ueland of Drayton Valley. Roger leaves behind to mourn his 28 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren who he was so very proud of. Family time and special gatherings was something he always looked forward to and always would check in with each one to be sure that they would make it to these functions.

Roger is survived by his brother Elmer (Carol) Riehl of Wildwood, and sisters Diane Jendrick of Wildwood, Lois Davio of Whitecourt, and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was predeceased by his wife Margaret Jean of 60 years, just a few days prior on October 9, 2021, his parents Arthur and Lydia Riehl, sister Alice Pudlo, brother Larry Riehl and granddaughter Jolene Heske.

Farming was Roger’s passion as he toiled long hours in the field working his land and tending to crops.  As his family grew, he soon started his own trucking company as well in which he hauled cattle, horses, and other farm animals. He also hauled lumber and fulfilled many other requests made by friends and neighbors. Roger would always have early starts to his day, in the field or in the truck and more often than not end his day having coffee with neighbors, friends and family.

Roger always spoke about the love for the land and farm life and shared his knowledge with all his children. Even after retiring from farming, he remained on the farm just to be able to look upon the fields and check the fences.

He loved to watch his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren succeed in all their endeavors and was ready to support and cheer them on. He will be sorrowfully missed by all who knew him and especially his family, friends, and neighbors whom he always greeted with a firm handshake and a warm hello.
