Remembering
Louise Udchitz
June 26, 1931 ~ April 8, 2024
We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother, Louise Udchitz, who lived a long and full life- marked with hard work and sacrifice, but also love and many joys.
Born on June 26, 1931 to Mary and George Smolski, Louise was part of a large family. Predeceased by her brothers Pete, Sam, John and Nick, she is survived by five sisters Katie, Elsie, Ruth, Mary, and Margie, and one brother George.
She was married to John Udchitz on June 25, 1950, and together they had nine children: Roseanna, Sharon, Anthony, Cindy, Ev, David, Susie, Kelly, and Wanda. The family faced heartbreak when they lost David, Susie, and Kelly.
The early years were rugged. Louise worked tirelessly, cooking in a lumber camp where she had to carry in wood and water.
Not wanting to raise her kids in the city, she and John moved their family to a farm near Evansburg. She enjoyed life on the farm and could always be found in her beautiful garden.
Later, Louise and John sold their farm and bought the Thorsby Hotel, which Louise ran with great pride. After the kids had all left home, Louise and John went their separate ways.
Louise continued to lead an independent life in Thorsby where she owned and operated the Thorsby Bottle Depot and Feed Mill, and later managed the concession at the Thorsby Haymaker Center. At the Haymaker she was renowned for her delicious homemade soups and pies- she made many friends there.
Louise enjoyed golfing, curling, bowling, and meeting friends for coffee. She adored little poodles, and owned several over the years.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She dedicated time to them, always arriving with gifts in hand. By her twilight years, Louise's legacy included 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild.
Retiring to Breton, Louise enjoyed her days with her cats, catching up with friends over coffee, and visiting her family often.
When she needed more care, she moved to Pembina Village Lodge in Evansburg, where she was loved by the staff and everyone had a 'Louise story'. Her final days were spent surrounded by her children, and she left this world knowing that she was loved and would be missed. Her family finds comfort knowing she is now reunited with David, Susie and Kelly.
Louise's spirit and resilience will forever live in the hearts and minds of all those who knew her.
