Ida Pohl Obituary

Ida Amy (Hunker) Pohl

October 25, 1927 ~ October 25, 2018

Ida passed away peacefully at the Evansburg Good Samaritan Car Centre at the age of exactly 91 years. She is survived by her three sons, Gary (Edith), Darryl, and Randy (Lauree), her three grandchildren, Mark, Shayne (Colby), and Erik, her siblings, Arnold, Irna, Gladys and Laurence (Pat), her sisters in laws, and her brother in laws, Robert (Jean) Pohl, Ida (Paul) Shellert, Selma Kalis, Daniel (Anne) Pohl, Dennis (Carolyn) Pohl, David (Kathy) Pohl and John (Ruth Pohl).

Ida was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Emma, her husband Henry, her brothers Adolph (Sonia) and Ed (Joan), her sister in laws, Frieda Vogel, Elsie Wissman, Doreen Pohl, and Florence Pohl, her brothers in law, Edward Pohl, Wilhelm Pohl (Jean), Herman Pohl (Ella). Walter Pohl (Maryanne), and Paul Pohl.

As the daughter of farmers who immigrated to Canada, Ida learned how to work hard at a young age. She grew up in the Sunnybrook area, working along side her parent and siblings. In her twenties she worked at St. Joseph's College and at the University of Alberta hospital in the operating room. Based on the stories she told it was a time of hard work and good fun. She continued in this position until she met her husband Henry Pohl. Henry and Ida were married in 1955. After a few years of marriage, they built a house in the Bonnie Doon area of Edmonton and proceeded to raise their three sons. Ida loved being a mother and always wished to have more children, especially a girl, but that was not to be, and she focused her love on her three sons and later on to her three grandchildren, who were a tremendous source of joy for her.

In 1975, Henry and Ida decided to move out to a half section of land they had bought in the Entwistle area. We assume that during this time is when Ida perfected her recipes for bread and turkey stuffing that were absolutely delicious! This is where she remained until her move to the Good Sam Extendicare in Evansburg in 2009.

Ida's moved to the Good Sam due to a diagnosis of dementia caused by cardiovascular disease. The early years of her dementia were try times for both her and her family.  The disease brought on personality changes and delusions that were upsetting for all who knew her. Gradually her dementia progressed to a point where she reached a place of peace. Her family is exceedingly grateful for the kind and compassionate care she received by all who worked at the Good Sam. What a blessing to be able to receive such quality care in your home community.

Ida was a Christian and a devoted follower of her church all of her life.
