Hazel Bernice Fausak
March 25, 1922-Jan 4, 2016
With deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Hazel was our matriarch, our hero and she will be deeply missed. Born in ParkCourt, AB, Hazel excelled at school and after graduating from Evansburg High School her adventuresome spirit took her to Toronto where she completed training as a radio operator using Morse code. After working briefly at Dorval Airport in Montreal, Hazel flew to Gander, Nfld, spending the duration of WWII aiding the war effort working for the Ferry Command, sending bombers from North America to Britain. This past November 2015, Hazel was flown to Gander as an honored guest at a fund-raising gala for the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. (Hazel’s wartime work is displayed at her own exhibit in the museum). In 1946 she resumed her life in ParkCourt, and in 1947 met and married young, debonair returning soldier, Fred Fausak. Her dream of a large family became a reality when within ten years they had nine healthy children. During these years the young couple forged a partnership that led to extensive improvements in their community. Hazel was a wonderful, patient mother, a creative genius who loved nothing more than teaching and guiding her children, as well as being a friend and mentor to many in her community. She had many interests – a life-long learner with more accomplishments than can be written. Preserving history, both community and family was a passion with her legacy including Foley Trail history book, Tipple Park Museum in Evansburg, family histories and numerous other writings. She was a leader and a worker, persevering in those interests that captured her imagination. Left to mourn Hazel’s passing are her children, Maureen (Bob), MaryBelle (Mark), Valerie, John, Faye, Fern (Al), Floyd (Donna), Geneve (Henry). Also grieving her loss are 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marion Fausak and family, and a large extended family in Canada and US. Hazel was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Fred; daughter Helen; brothers Arthur and Archie; parents Abel and Ida Bjornstad; Fred’s parents and brother, Kurt.
Funeral service will be held at the Evansburg Legion Hall on Sunday, Jan.10 at 2 p.m. Viewing from 1 – 1:45. Interment to follow. Pastor Jeremiah Pierson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pembina Historical Society or charity of one’s choice.
