GWENDOLYN MARJORIE MAIN (nee Irwin)
July 12, 1938- May 15, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce that Gwen left us, peacefully, in her sleep, at Mayerthorpe Hospital, Alberta. Gwen was the loving wife of Bert Main, and mother of five children. Lyndell Oldfield (Lon), Steven Main (Carol), Judy Barchuk(Larry), Helen Feldberg (Jeff), and Bob Main (Carrie). She will be deeply missed by fifteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews and their families. The Prindiville and Brammer families also hold special regard for Grandma Main.
Gwen was born in Toronto and as a young child moved to the Boyne Lake in Haliburton, Ontario. Because of the distance from town she took her early schooling by correspondence, then went to High School in Haliburton. When Gwen was a young woman of eighteen she married Bert. They built their family home and raised five children. Eventually Gwen worked out of the home at various jobs, including cooking at Maple Sands Resort and Camp Wanakita where she especially enjoyed interacting with all the young campers. Upon retiring from there she took on the role of private support worker, and volunteered at Community Care Haliburton. Throughout this time she also took excellent care of her aged mother. Gwen was well known for the kindness she extended to anyone she met who needed a meal, a ride, or company and encouragement, often offering wisdom and a ray of hope from the Scriptures.
Gwen loved music, get togethers with family and friends, and dancing. Her pleasure came from simple things like growing flowers, berry picking, chickadees in her birch tree, setting an extra plate, and staying connected with friends . She is lovingly remembered for the walks, crafts and baking sessions with her grandchildren. She and Bert also enjoyed travel to Texas, Alberta, and the East Coast, among other places.
After Bert's death, Gwen took the bold step of moving to Alberta, where two of her daughters live. She immediately developed warm and lasting friendships within her new congregation and her new community of Evansburg, where she set an example of generosity, positivity and hospitality.
