GIBBS, Donald (Don) William
(Feb 18, 1943 – Jan 23, 2022)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Gibbs, 78, of High Prairie. He passed Sunday, January 23, 2022, with his family by his side, after a brief battle with cancer. He was a big guy with a big heart and a big sense of humour. In addition to his wife Sharon, he will be deeply missed by his children Robert, Angela (Nolan) Mutter, Paula (Dan) Peck, and Michelle (Dave) Hill. He was known and loved as ‘Papa’ to his grandchildren Randall, Karlee (Tyler), Melissa (Justin), Michaela (Justin), James, and Danelle (Sean). He will be dearly missed by close friends Arlene (Rob), Taryn, Natalie (Paul), Madison, and many, many more. To his surviving siblings Eunice (Lindy), Larry (Elaine), Douglas (Pauline), Bryne (Eveline), Danny, and Colleen (Clint) he will be forever loved as ‘Big Brother’. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also mourn Don’s passing.
Don joined the Canadian Army in 1962, where he became a heavy duty mechanic. Throughout his military career he was stationed in Ontario, New Brunswick, West Germany, and back to Edmonton before discharging in 1975. He and his family lived throughout Alberta including Hines Creek, High River, Brooks, Red Deer, Edson, Evansburg, and lastly, High Prairie. Don was a proud Royal Canadian Legion member wherever he went and he had a great sense of community. Besides his family, sports was Don’s next big love, with curling topping the list. Whether through the Legion, community, or sports, Don’s presence was welcomed and appreciated by those that knew him.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.
